Essay topic: decided!

Naya Rivera’s “Sorry” lyric video

Now to actually write about it…

(This is a pretty pointless blog post, but if anyone watches it I’d be interested to hear your take on it)

  1. I’m just continually confused by the perception that exposed breasts in music videos are acceptable…

But I think it’s an excellent piece of media to do an analysis of.

    • My problem isn’t the exposed breasts; they’re just nipples and everyone has them. I’m more concerned with the blatant sexualization of female breasts and the body fragmentation, as well as the lyrics (which are just textbook girl hate).

      • Those are all awesome things to explore. I hadn’t even considered them because I was too angry about the breasts. Good luck!

  2. okay as promised I’m back. Please forgive any typos our lack of sentence structure but I am dictating this on my phone. I had to come back to this and actually is stated that this blog was pointless, when in fact it’s quite the opposite. There are so many problems with this video I don’t even know where to begin. But I will point out 2 topics that popped out at me forever. Firstly let’s start with her line about bagging him. This is very typical of how women and girls seem to set their goals based on using their sexuality to get the man. It insinuates that using sexuality is powerful and you must be manipulative and backstabbing to get the prize. I’m not quite sure why men are often looked as the final destination prize if you will. It kind of makes me laugh when I think of the dirty socks I pick up off the floor and the farts in bed. Haha. But anyway its saying that men only want perfect 10’s and women fighting over them so they can be nothing but an ornament to use. And hey I guess it gets it to the south of France too. I also and troubledwith how women are constantly pinned up against each other and always competitive instead of supportive of their sisters. To me the whole video is completely pathetic and simplistic but that unfortunately is how our society is starting to look. There’s always been women pitted against women even in the medieval times when they fought over who would get the king. Women are always depicted as either the damsel in distress, the manipulator, the gold digger, or the whore while the men just sit around and let them claw each others eyes out for them. the irony in all this is that men don’t really want that from what I’ve learned and that they think women and girls are just silly when they have like this. My oldest son was very well liked by the girls and he used to think they were so stupid. I have no idea why girls feel the need to be so sexual its almost to the point where desensitation and lack of subtlety is becoming quite the norm. Oh and please don’t misunderstand me, I blame the media 100 percent. Anyway back to the fighting. The song “dont you wish your girlfriend was hot like me”is the song that came to mind when I saw this video incidently. We always hear about the cat fights that are supposedly so hot. And the Angelina Jolie Brad Pitt incident where poor Jennifer Aniston was left for the hotter babe. Angelina was made out to look like the wicked one whereas Brad was made out to look like the typical guy, who wouldn’t want Angelina? He wasn’t blamed it all from my perspective but she was. The fact was probably that he simply fell in love with someone else, this happens all the time but the media zoned right in on how sexy and coniving Angelina was and how “girl next door” like Jennifer was. the woman singing in this video should take note of how did Jennifer Aniston reacted to all of this with class and dignity by the way. Michelle Obama’s butt was photographed next to another political French woman as they walked up the stairs and the caption red something like Americans butts are large. there is a magazine in Australia called zoo. They put the most degrading pictures of women and they always ask the question which side? In other words they have these women next to each other and the men get to vote on which one they would rather fuck. Actually that is on the Facebook page. this allows men and boys to feel entitled to not only objectify us but I honestly think that they are worthy of having whatever perfect body they want. They even went so far as to Photoshop a woman’s body in half and they said left or right? You should have seen the display of sexual degradation in the answers of the men. so not only are women constantly being pitted against each other, in this case one was so insignificant that she was chopped in half and her body parts or fighting against each other for which side would please the man more. Seriously I could go on and on but I won’t because I just can’t I’m too busy but I really wanted to say that I’m glad you’re doing this project. And one more thing, I’m not happy about the nudity that I’m seeing in videos and it seems to be very prevalent lately and its for the same reason you stated. Its gratuitous and objectifying even though I’m noticing mostly women actually, saying that its art. Oh brother. When my 12 year old can type anything in to Google and see tits and ass like that without a problem, it is very dangerous and disturbing to me. Anyway good luck on your project and again I know my writing probably looks like a 10 year old did it, but I had to use my phone today. 🙂

    • Wow, thanks for your reply! I hit on a lot of these points in my analysis, but I neglected to reference other specific examples like Aniston/Jolie/Pitt. That’s a great example of how these stereotypes extend to the ‘real world.’ I may post my analysis later this week just to have something else on the blog. 🙂
